The 73 Member organizations of the Joint National Committee for Languages and the National Council for Languages and International Studies, representing 300,000 professionals in language education, research and development, translation, interpreting, localization, and globalization, applaud the Department’s efforts to create a comprehensive plan for international engagement. We note the degree of integration of the international strategy with domestic education policy, and the willingness of the Department to engage in meaningful collaboration in the development and implementation of the strategy.

However, the consensus of JNCL-NCLIS is that three areas of the Strategy require significant attention, in order to support the Department’s goal of global competence, which, as the Department notes in the Strategy, is essential for national security and economic competitiveness.
