Yesterday, the House Appropriations Committee released a proposal to reduce funding for the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) by $8 million, a budget cut of more than 5%.

NEH funding has supported projects such as the Dictionary of American Regional English and the Documenting Endangered Languages initiative, and continues to play a key role in many areas of linguistic research. This proposed cut would continue a trend of declining funding for the humanities which would bring NEH to its lowest funding level since 1972.

Discussion of this legislation will begin in the House as soon as today.

If you wish to express your support for maintaining or increasing federal funding levels for linguistics and the humanities, please contact your representatives in Congress, either directly or through this form provided by the National Humanities Alliance.
