The Linguistic Society of America has endorsed the reauthorization of the America COMPETES Act, a Senate bill which would increase funding for the National Science Foundation over the next five years. The LSA was one of over 140 signatories to a statement on America COMPETES (PDF) authored by the Coalition for National Science Funding (CNSF) and sent to the Senate Commerce, Science and Transporation Committee. 

"Robust and dependable funding levels", the statement notes, "will enable the Foundation and the science and engineering communities to plan, develop infrastructure, maintain a steady pipeline of graduate and postdoctoral students, and have feasible expectations of making new discoveries. The upward funding trajectory for NSF provided in this bill would go a long way toward closing the innovation deficit that has been building with recent stagnant U.S. research budgets."
