We are delighted to announce that the LSA Executive Committee has approved revisions to the LSA's Ethics Statement, incorporating comments from LSA members and other interested parties. View the revised statement.

From April through June 2018, the LSA hosted on its website the working draft of the revised LSA Ethics Statement and received several comments from LSA members. The commenting period closed June 15, 2019.  This statement supersedes the previous version of the Ethics Statement, which may be viewed here (.pdf).

The LSA's Ethics Committee addressed and incorporated each comment into a revised statement, which was submitted to the LSA Executive Committee and approved in July 2019. The 2019 Ethics Statement provides members with an ethical framework and guiding principles that apply to all LSA-sponsored activities and all settings where linguists conduct their work. This statement aligns with other key LSA statements, such as the new Civility Policy. In particular, the 2019 Ethics Statement expounds more fully on responsibilities to participants, communities, and the public, as well as to students and colleagues. The statement is now also accompanied by a list of further resources that includes other ethics statements, guidelines, and related materials.

While this is a "final" statement, we recognize that it is a living document as dialog continues around this topic.  LSA members can leave comments using the "Add new comment" field at the bottom of the Ethics Statement, and they will be considered the next time the Ethics Statement is reviewed for revisions, in approximately seven years.
