The LSA regrets to report the January 26, 2020 death of G. Hubert Matthews. Hubert joined the LSA in 1953 and was a Life Member. He began his career in linguistics at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) as a research assistant in 1956 and continued there as a professor of linguistics until 1974. He was a part of the beginning of the Graduate Program in Linguistics at MIT (founded in 1961), initiating a course in typology of grammar in 1962. He later moved to Montana, where he spent the rest of his life, and worked in several capacities with the Crow Nation and Crow language.
