Please join the LSA in congratulating Mary Murphy for being awarded a National Endowment for the Humanities Grant. 

On July 29, 2020, The National Endowmnet for the Humanities (NEH) awarded $30 million in grants for 238 humantities projects. Grant awards support the preservation of historic collections, humanities exhibitions and documentaries, scholarly research, and educational opportunities for teachers.

Murphy is an LSA member and professor of linguistics at the University of Sussex. Her research mainly concerns lexicology, lexical semantics and pragmatics, and lexicography, all involving ;study of phenomena related to word meaning. In 2016, she was a National Endowment for the Humanities Public Scholar, which resulted in the book, The Prodigal Tongue: the love-hate relationship between British and American English.

Her most recent NEH award will fund the completion of a book on the historical function and development of the English language’s small words and what such words reveal about their speakers.
