At its most recent meeting, the LSA Executive Committee adopted a statement and guidelines document on misgendering, developed by our Committee on LBGTQ+ Linguistics (COZIL).

The statement serves as an articulation of LSA values, which recognize the role of language in creating a welcoming environment for students and practitioners of linguistics, and recognizes the harms that result when linguists or community members reject this role.

The guidelines provide a brief set of practical ways to make written and verbal and signed communication in linguistics (with colleagues and students) more gender-inclusive and identity-affirming.

Both documents are open for comment by LSA members and may be updated/revised periodically with appropriate review and approval.
