The LSA is accepting nominations for its prestigious Leonard Bloomfield Book Award, given annually for the volume which makes the most outstanding contribution to the development of our understanding of language and linguistics.

Nominations may be made by publishers of linguistic works as well as by LSA members. With certain exceptions, all authors of nominated books must be current members of the Society. Books must be published between January 1, 2022 and December 31, 2022. It is incumbent upon nominators to ensure that these criteria are met prior to submission of the nominated works.

Nomination process

  • Any individuals, LSA members and publishers may nominate a book for the Leonard Bloomfield Book Award.
  • Nominations must be accompanied by five print copies or an electronic version of the book before the deadline. The nomination will not be considered complete until these copies have been received.
  • Each nomination is for one book only. If nominating more than one book, a separate form must be completed for each book.

Eligibility

  • The nominated book must be published in the preceding calendar year.
  • All authors of nominated books must be current members of the LSA.
  • Exceptions may be made at the discretion of the Committee for books whose authors are not all LSA members, such as books with co-authors who are native-speaker language consultants who collaborated in the preparation of the book, but who are not otherwise part of the Linguistics community. In this case, at least one author must be a member of the LSA.

Selection criteria

  1. Novelty: the nominated book must be original and present new concepts or ideas not part of the published literature.
  2. Empirical Import: claims made are empirically falsifiable.
  3. Conceptual Significance: the nominated book enriches the overall understanding of the nature of human language.
  4. Clarity: nominated books are judged on clearly formulated points and reader-friendly text.

We are encouraging nominators to send instructions for accessing any nominated volumes electronically. If hard copies are sent, five copies of nominated volumes should be sent by May 1, 2023, to the LSA Secretariat (address below).
